Zwift will soon stop working on some Apple devices – here's how to make sure you won't be affected
BRR Analysis
Zwift has announced that come August, its popular indoor cycling platform will cease functionality on older Apple devices that do not meet specific software requirements. This means iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV users running outdated operating systems will be unable to access the app, necessitating an upgrade to a compatible iOS or tvOS version to continue their virtual rides. The company has yet to detail the exact minimum software versions, but the message is clear: update or be left behind.
This move by Zwift is hardly unprecedented in the tech world, where software development continually outpaces hardware longevity. For a platform that relies heavily on graphical processing and real-time data, maintaining compatibility across an ever-expanding array of legacy devices becomes an engineering and financial burden. It reflects a broader industry trend where companies prioritize innovation and security, often at the expense of older tech, pushing users towards newer, more capable hardware, or at least current software.
Ultimately, this is less a technical hurdle and more a gentle nudge for some users to finally update their devices. The virtual peloton waits for no one, least of all those clinging to iOS 12.
