Canyon's new unreleased Grail CFR is an aero bike with clearance for XC tyres

BRR Analysis

Canyon has recently unveiled, albeit inadvertently through leaked images and BikeRadar’s subsequent reporting, an unreleased version of their Grail CFR gravel bike. This new iteration appears to feature a significantly more aerodynamic design, reminiscent of road-going aero machines, while crucially maintaining ample clearance for what are described as cross-country (XC) mountain bike tyres. This suggests a notable shift towards speed and versatility for the German manufacturer’s flagship gravel offering.

This development is particularly pertinent given the ongoing evolution of the gravel racing scene, which increasingly demands both outright speed on smoother sections and robust capability for technical terrain. Canyon's previous Grail models, with their distinctive double-decker handlebars, were already pushing boundaries, but this new design signals a clear intent to compete at the sharp end of events like Unbound. It represents a strategic response to competitors like Specialized and BMC, who have also been refining their aero-gravel platforms, aiming to capture a segment of the market that values marginal gains on varied surfaces.

Ultimately, Canyon's move to blend aero road DNA with XC tyre clearance is less an innovation and more an acknowledgement of where competitive gravel racing is headed: faster, more brutal, and demanding a bike that can truly do it all. The industry, it seems, is still searching for the perfect compromise.
