The loss of the Tour de l'Avenir is another blow to women's cycling development

The women's edition of the Tour de l'Avenir, a crucial U23 stage race for emerging talent, has reportedly been cancelled, leaving a significant void in the development pathway. This follows the inaugural women's race in 2023, won by Switzerland's Shirin van Anrooij, which was widely praised for its competitive parcours and role in bridging the gap to the Women's WorldTour. The men's race, a traditional proving ground, will continue as planned.

This cancellation is a substantial setback for women's cycling, particularly given the ongoing efforts to professionalise the sport and expand the racing calendar. The Tour de l'Avenir offered invaluable experience in multi-day racing for riders transitioning from junior ranks, mirroring the men's event which has launched countless Grand Tour careers. Its loss undermines the strategic investment needed to cultivate future champions and deepen the talent pool, especially for riders outside the established WorldTour feeder teams.
